About Dr. Merritt
Education Dr. David H. Merritt is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a 1969 graduate of Shades Valley High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Continuing his education, Dr. Merritt completed a specialty Masters Degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Along with his Pediatric Dental practice in Florence, Dr. Merritt is an active member of the pediatric dental professional organizations. He is the past President of the Alabama Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, has served on the editorial board for the Journal of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and is a diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. One of the activities Dr. Merritt most enjoys besides his private practice is his position as an adjunct faculty member of the UAB School of Dentistry. In this position he is able to teach pediatric dentistry to graduate dental students.
Passions Dr Merritt is a strong advocate of available dental care for all children. He is working with a state-wide task force to address this health need of the children in Alabama. Accurate reporting to the public of dental credentials by a dentist, and informed consent by parents before a dental treatment is performed on children, are topics in which Dr. Merritt is greatly interested.
Family Dr. Merritt and his wife, Vickie, chose to make Florence, Alabama their home in 1978. They enjoyed all aspects of Northwest Alabama especially water sports with their three children, David, Christopher, and Lauren. Besides activities with his family, Dr. Merritt is an avid student of classical music, enjoys a game of golf, and loves baseball, the game he played as a youngster and while in high school.
