The difference between a pediatric dentist & a dentist

When it comes time to choose a dentist for your children, it’s a good idea to look for someone who specializes in kids. You may wonder why seeing a pediatric dentist rather than a general dentist is important, and that’s a good question. Just like a pediatrician is trained to care specifically for children and the changing needs of their bodies, a pediatric dentist is an expert in the mouth, teeth, and oral development of your kiddo. Difference between a pediatric dentist & a dentist

We’re Kid Experts!
It is no secret that it takes a lot of time and training to become a dentist. But did you know that pediatric dentists have to complete additional training even after they’ve graduated from dental school?
Pediatric dental residency prepares the doctor to work on patients from birth to adolescence. The additional 2-3 years of training makes sure that a pediatric dentist becomes an expert in the dental development and potential problems that children of all ages may face. We know that you want the very best when it comes to your kids. While taking your child to a general dentist is not a bad thing, it is not the path that will ensure they receive the specialized care that a board-certified pediatric dentist can offer.

We Care about Fun!
At Pediatric Dentistry of Florence, Dr. Cruise and our entire team’s top priority is your children! Our doctor and staff are compassionate, and our technology and training are state-of-the-art. Additionally, we want your child to feel comfortable and have fun while they are here!

Our office is designed to be more fun and engaging for children than your typical general dentist’s office probably is. We understand visiting the dentist can be scary or overwhelming for patients (of all ages). We do everything we can to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Our staff knows how to talk to kids to make them feel safe and comfortable – and hopefully have a little fun while we are at it.

We’re Pediatric Prepared!
You may wonder what we have against general dentists and the short answer is NOTHING! We love our area general dentists!  After all, the vast majority of our patients eventually “graduate” into their care.  General dentists are well-trained to address the needs of their adult patients, and we encourage all of our patient’s parents to make twice-yearly appointments with their general dentist. But when it comes to your kids, there are some specific issues that dental school just does not provide specialty level training for.

From thumb sucking, tongue ties, baby teeth, the eruption of permanent teeth, and more, we are 100% prepared to provide excellent care to your children. Pediatric dentists monitor and are prepared for the dental milestones that your child will face throughout their childhood and adolescence. Additionally, we understand that caring for our patients also means caring for their parents and caregivers. As they say – it takes a village to raise a child. Our job is not only to care for your children but to help you care for their oral health at home. We welcome and are always ready for your questions. We will always do our best to prepare you for what your child is going through developmentally and what you can expect in the future.
